Meet TARCOG’s Leadership: James Lucas
January 7, 2026
Name: James Lucas
Title: Board President
How long have you been on the TARCOG Board? Are you now or have you previously been on the executive committee?
A long time — I’m not really sure. Since Bob Culver was the executive director. As president, I am currently on the executive committee.
What has been your biggest professional achievement?
Being elected to the Athens City Council. It means so much to me because my father, Sandy Lucas, ran for city council in 1972 and 1974. Back then, our elections were held citywide, and it was hard for a minority to get elected. That changed when we went to district voting. The late Councilman Jimmy Gill helped get me appointed to the Athens School Board and the TARCOG Board. I was on the school board for 27 years, and then I was appointed to the Athens City Council when Frank Travis passed away. The election last year is the first time I’ve ever had to campaign for office. I hope my father, who has since passed, is proud.
What career advice do you live by? Who gave it to you?
When I was first appointed to the Athens City School Board, my sister-in-law, Margaret McWilliams Gardner, who passed away last year, told me to always remember who I was elected to represent. It was great advice, and I’ve carried it with me in every position I’ve held.
What would be the theme song of your life right now?
I like to listen to Christian music and blues, but I don’t really have a theme song.
Who is someone who’s made a big impact on your life? Why?
My father. Ever since I can remember, people came to him for advice on political and church issues. He was a deacon in the church most of his life and was well known in our association of churches. Today, someone who makes an impact on my life is Pastor Damon Betts. From his work on the church association’s building to listening to him pastor his congregation, his standards are high. He wouldn’t ask anyone to do something he wouldn’t do himself, and he’s always there to help — especially older people — no matter the need.
What is a fun fact that people probably don’t know about you?
I enjoy football, especially college football — Auburn.
Where are you from? Where did you go to/graduate high school?
My parents were in Talladega visiting family when I was born, but I’ve lived in Limestone County most of my life. I graduated from Trinity High School in Athens.
Do you have any hobbies?
I serve on so many boards and have council work, so I don’t have much time for hobbies right now.
Favorite place you’ve traveled?
Germany. I wasn’t so happy when I was there because I was drafted into the service, but after I got back and reflected, I realized it was an experience like a four-year college education. It was a great experience to be in Germany for two years.
What’s one item you can’t live without?
I’d have to say our family gatherings. My four sisters are all back in Limestone County, and it’s a great time when we get together.
