When it comes to helping seniors navigate important legal matters, TARCOG is here to help with Attorney Bryan Andrews.
“I love working with the elderly population. It is an opportunity to serve those who helped build our state and country into what they are today,” Bryan said. “I always keep in mind that I am helping someone’s grandparent, and they deserve respect and to have their legal needs met.”
The Legal Assistance Program at TARCOG helps older adults across North Alabama access the legal guidance they need to protect their rights and plan for the future, said Director of Aging Programs Sheila Dessau-Ivey.
She says the program is available to adults age 60 and older in DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Marshall counties. The program provides legal services at no attorney cost, although donations are accepted to help support the program.
Bryan, a practicing attorney for 26 years, is an elder law specialist and staff attorney with Legal Services of Alabama. He started handling TARCOG’s caseload in December 2025 and is available to assist with matters affecting the aging population’s well-being, including:
- Powers of attorney
- Medicaid eligibility
- Wills and estate planning
- Consumer protection issues
- Long-term care concerns.
Services provided through the program include document preparation, limited legal representation, one-on-one legal counsel.
Bryan also offers community education programs designed to help older adults better understand their legal rights. This month, Bryan participated in a Facebook Live outreach event recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.
Bryan said while the program offers a wide range of legal assistance, there are some cases that fall outside the scope of the program, including criminal cases, bankruptcy matters, and fee-generating cases.
