TARCOG’S Area Agency on Aging offers low cost legal assistance to Senior Citizens. TARCOG employs a full time attorney to help seniors living in a five county region with various legal matters.
ELIGIBILITY
To qualify for legal help under TARCOG’s program you must:
- Be 60 years of age or older
- Live in DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison or Marshall County

TARCOG’s attorney can generally help you with the following types of matters:
- Income / Nutrition / Benefits
- Health / Long Term Care
- Housing / Utilities
- Individual Rights
- Consumer Issues
- Powers of Attorney

CASES NOT HANDLED
TARCOG’s attorney is not allowed to assist clients in handling:
- Criminal Matters
- Filing Bankruptcy
- Fee Generating Cases
Fees
TARCOG does not charge a set fee for its services; however, voluntary donations are permitted and encouraged. For those donors who want to know “how much everyone else donates” TARCOG has established a suggested contribution table to provide guidance to those wishing to make a donation.
SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT
DeKalb County
Seniors living in DeKalb County can schedule and appointment by calling (256) 845-8590. Appointments will generally take place at the DeKalb County Council on Aging Office in Fort Payne unless other arrangements have been made.
Jackson County
Seniors living in Jackson County can schedule an appointment by calling (256) 574-6733. Appointments will generally take place at the Jackson County Council on Aging Office in Scottsboro unless other arrangements have been made.
Limestone County
Seniors living in Limestone County can schedule an appointment by calling (256) 233-6412. Appointments will generally take place at the Athens-Limestone Senior Center.
Madison County
Seniors living in Madison County can schedule an appointment by calling (256) 830-0818. Appointments generally take place at the Area Agency on Aging office located at 5075 Research Drive NW, Huntsville, Alabama.
Marshall County
Seniors living in Marshall County can schedule an appointment by calling (256) 571-7805. Appointments generally take place at the Marshall County Council on Aging Office in Guntersville.
Home and Facility Visits
Sometimes home visits can be scheduled for people who receive services through Hospice, Home Health, Alabama Cares and Medicaid Waiver programs. Facility visits can sometimes be scheduled for seniors living in nursing homes. To schedule a home or facility visit the senior requesting the assistance should call (256) 830-0818.
