USDA Food Boxes

Many senior citizens in the TARCOG region greatly benefited from the efforts of GA Foods, the State of Alabama’s food service vendor for Elderly Nutrition Services. Having received a grant from the USDA Farm to Families Program, GA Foods delivered food boxes to targeted senior centers in DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Marshall Counties. Due to the hundreds of boxes being delivered at each site, each County Council on Aging planned and coordinated with staff, volunteers and community partners to carry out the “curbside delivery” process. TARCOG staff also assisted in this effort. Each food box contained a variety of nutritional items such as meat, vegetable, fruits, cheese and milk. By the end of August, 22,360 food boxes will have been delivered to TARCOG’s five-county region. We are grateful for our generous partners, GA Foods, and for the assistance we received from the Alabama Department of Senior Services.
